Menstruation Is Power: Supporting Girls With Confidence

Imagine looking forward to going to school, only to stay home because you do not have access to the support or resources you need during your period.

For many girls around the world, menstruation is about far more than a monthly cycle. It can affect confidence, participation, and sometimes even access to education. According to UNICEF, more than 300 million women and girls menstruate every day, yet many still face challenges accessing menstrual health education, essential resources, and safe sanitation facilities. Limited access to these resources can contribute to school absenteeism, reduced participation, and lower confidence among adolescent girls.

At Womenful Voice, we believe a period should never determine whether a girl attends school, participates in class, or believes in her own potential. Education is about more than classrooms, books, and scholarships. It is also about ensuring girls have the support they need to learn with confidence every day.

Periods are a natural part of growing up, yet in many communities they are still surrounded by stigma, misinformation, and silence. Too many girls are made to feel embarrassed to ask questions or seek support, turning something natural into a source of anxiety and isolation. When those barriers exist, girls are left navigating more than their periods. They are left navigating barriers to learning and opportunity. When accurate information replaces uncertainty and support replaces silence, girls begin to see themselves differently. They ask questions without fear, attend school with greater confidence, and recognize that their future is defined not by stigma, but by their abilities, ambitions, and opportunities.

That is the future we believe every girl deserves.

Where Support Becomes Opportunity

In Haiti, many girls continue to navigate menstruation while also facing financial, educational, and social barriers that make access to menstrual health resources more difficult. Families often prioritize education, yet essential products, accurate information, and open conversations  remain out of reach for many girls.

That is why Womenful Voice created the Menstruation Is Power (MIP) initiative.

MIP was built on a simple belief: menstruation should never stand in the way of a girl’s education, confidence, or future. Rather than addressing only one part of the challenge, the program combines education with practical support to help girls manage their periods safely and confidently.

Through Menstruation Is Power, participants receive:

  • Menstrual and reproductive health education
  • Practical guidance and access to reusable menstrual products
  • Safe spaces for open conversations and questions
  • Support that engages girls, families, teachers, and communities

What makes the program especially meaningful is that it supports not only girls, but also the communities that help them thrive. Mothers, teachers, university students, and boys are included in conversations around menstrual health, helping replace stigma with understanding and creating environments where girls feel supported rather than isolated.

In 2026, MIP reached 189 direct beneficiaries across five educational institutions in Ouanaminthe, Haiti while providing menstrual health education alongside 954 reusable pads and 83 menstrual cups.

After each MIP execution, this year marked our 5th year, the team plans on conducting a thorough study, and we cannot wait to share the results with you. It is also important to note that the menstrual cups we distribute last up to 5 years, and the reusable pads offer up to 2 years of use. In past evaluations, most Haitian participants shared that this support has been life-changing, as they typically spend at least $3 per cycle to manage their menstruation with dignity, a significant burden in a country where many families live on under a dollar a day. This is about sustainability, not just short-term relief.

Behind every statistic is a girl who can stay in school, a mother who feels better equipped to support her daughter, a teacher who can foster a more understanding classroom, and a community beginning to replace silence with knowledge.

Why We Call It Power

At first glance, the name Menstruation Is Power may seem unexpected.

For many girls, menstruation is often associated with discomfort, uncertainty, or barriers to education. But through this initiative, we have come to see something different.

We call it power because navigating this natural part of life with knowledge, support, and confidence builds resilience, self-awareness, and a stronger sense of belonging. Those qualities help girls participate fully in school, advocate for themselves, and grow into confident leaders within their communities.

That transformation is reflected in the voices of the girls we serve.

“I used to stay home during my period. Now I have pads and knowledge.” – MIP Participant

In just a few words, she reminds us what meaningful support can make possible. A girl who once stayed home now walks into school with confidence, knowledge, and the freedom to keep learning.

We have also seen how education creates a ripple effect beyond the individual. It begins with one girl, but it grows through families, classrooms, and communities, creating environments where girls can learn, ask questions, and pursue their futures with confidence.

That is the power we believe in.

Not the power of menstruation itself, but the power of knowledge, understanding, and community to ensure that no girl’s education or future is limited by something so natural.

Looking Ahead

Some of the most meaningful change begins with something simple, a conversation that replaces silence with understanding.

Through MIP, we have seen what happens when girls are given knowledge, practical resources, and a community that believes in them. They participate with greater confidence, ask questions without fear, and begin to realize that their future is defined not by barriers, but by their potential.

Every workshop, every conversation, and every resource shared creates opportunities that extend far beyond a single program. They strengthen families, empower communities, and remind every girl that she deserves to learn, grow, and thrive with confidence.

At Womenful Voice, we remain committed to building that future: one girl, one family, and one community at a time.

Because every girl deserves to begin her school day thinking about her dreams, not the barriers standing in her way.

If this story resonates with you, we invite you to stand with us. Together, we can create a future where every girl has the knowledge, support, and opportunity to reach her full potential and where no girl’s education is interrupted by something as natural as her period.
